Inspiration for this Initiative:

Check out this short video called "The Story of Bottled Water":

Once the 5th Grade MATH CLUB saw the video, we started asking questions about the math behind the bottled water industry. For example, Americans buy 1/2 million bottles of water EACH WEEK (80% of which end up in landfills, which can leach chemicals into the land and/or get washed into rivers, streams and oceans). Then we started to wonder how our school is involved in the bottled water industry chain, so we started brainstorming.
Guiding Questions driving this Initiative:

  • How do the purchase and use of water bottles affect our school?

  • What can we do to change peoples' water buying habits?

Our action plan:

  • Collect data about the number of water bottles purchased in our school on a weekly basis.
  • Think about effective ways to respond.
